Overview
The Department of Passports (DoP) Nepal issues the second-generation biometric e-Passport. Under the latest July 2026 guidelines, applicants can select either a standard 34-page passport or a thick 66-page passport for frequent travelers. Having a National Identity (NID) number is strictly mandatory for all applicants above 16 years of age.

3Appointment & Visit
Online Registration
Fill out the pre-enrollment on the official website, upload documents, and choose your appointment date and venue.
Physical Visit

Biometric Enrolment
Give physical biometrics (10 fingerprints, live photo, iris scan, and signature verification).

Q. How much does a 34-page vs 66-page passport cost?
For 34 pages: Normal service at DAO is NPR 5,000, and Express service at DOP (Kathmandu) is NPR 12,000. For 66 pages: Normal service at DAO is NPR 10,000, and Express service at DOP (Kathmandu) is NPR 20,000.
Q. Can I wear contact lenses or glasses for the passport photo?
No, you must remove all glasses, contact lenses, caps, earrings, and nose rings before your live biometric photo is taken.
Q. Is NID mandatory for minor children?
No, children under 16 years of age do not need an NID number. They require a Minor Identity Card (Nabalik Parichayak Patra) issued by the DAO, along with their parents' original citizenship cards.
Q. What if I lost my old passport?
You must pay an additional lost penalty fee of NPR 5,000, submit a Police Report stating the loss of your passport, and complete the physical verification at the DAO/DOP.
Q. Can I renew my passport from a Nepali Embassy abroad?
Yes, you can apply online for renewal and visit the nearest Nepali Embassy or Consulate (e.g., in Qatar, US, UK, Saudi Arabia) with your old passport. The fee is USD 80 (or equivalent local currency) for a 34-page passport.
